The Lowveld Community Orchestra was established in 2013 with the following objectives:
To create a community orchestra open to all musicians regardless of age and ability;
To provide an opportunity for the rehearsal and performance of classical concert music in an environment that promotes individual and ensemble improvement;
To entertain and encourage participation in music performance for members’ own enjoyment and that of the community by providing regularly scheduled performances for residents of the area;
To promote and increase community awareness and appreciation of classical concert music; and
To grow, develop and provide orchestral experience to young musicians and musicians from under-serviced communities.
The LCO rehearses twice a month on Sunday afternoons at the NG Gemeente Westergloed in Nelspruit. Rehearsals offer a warm and friendly environment with a focus on encouraging members’ musical development, growing friendships and building community.
As part of our vision to nurture and grow local musicians, the Lowveld Development Orchestra was established as an offshoot of the LCO in 2023. Under the leadership of Monique Christie and Rhona le Roux, the development orchestra has grown to around 30 members and offers ensemble practices every second week on Monday afternoons to primary and high school learners and adult beginners. The development orchestra also collaborates with the Pienaar Brass Hub led by Sbusiso Madonsela.
